Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, designated Copenhagen as the World Capital of Architecture for 2023, by recommendation of the International Union of Architects (UIA).

On the theme of «Sustainable Futures – Leave No One Behind», Copenhagen will host a series of events and programmes in which the municipality, working together with the Danish Association of Architects and other native professionals, will analyze how architecture and urban planning contribute to meeting the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

This belongs to the initiative launched in 2018 by UNESCO in agreement with the UIA called the World Capitals of Architecture, which «reflects the commitment of both organizations to promote urban issue, in line with Goal 11 of the Sustainable Development Agenda for 2030: ‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.'»

The agreement also seeks to point out how urban identity and sustainable urban development are impacted by architecture, city planning, and culture in general; as Thomas Vonier, UIA President stated «We want to highlight how architects, with the help of local governments and communities, can play a key role in identifying solutions that benefit communities (…) Connecting culture and architecture is essential to create inclusive, productive and sustainable cities and communities for all.«

The first city to be part of this action was Rio de Janeiro, where the World Congress of Architects took place online, from 18 to 22 July 2021. Regarding Copenhagen designation Azoulay said: “Copenhagen will build upon Rio’s achievements, by continuing to show the way in which architecture and culture can respond to the challenges of our time, especially in the environmental field.”
