The Venice Biennale has announced the Ghanaian-Scottish Architect Lesley Lokko, as curator of the 18th edition of the Architecture Biennale, to be held in 2023.


In the words of the president of the Venice Biennale, Roberto Cicutto: «The appointment of Lesley Lokko as curator of the 18th International Architecture Exhibition is a way of welcoming the gaze of an international personality who is able to interpret, through different roles, her own position in the contemporary debate on architecture and cities, which takes as its starting point her own experience immersed in a continent that is increasingly becoming a laboratory of experimentation and proposals for the whole contemporary world.»


Lesley Lokko has born in Dundee, Scotland, in 1964. The architect, educator, academic and best-seller novelist, studied architecture at The Bartlett School of Architecture, and obtained a Ph.D from The University of London. She has taught in different Universities across the world, including: The UCL’s Bartlett School of Architecture, The Metropolitan University of London, Kingston University in London, The University of East London, University of Greenwich, among other institutions in North America and Africa.  


Currently, she is the director and founder of the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa and the Africa Future Institute in Accra, Ghana. In 2021 she was part of the jury of the Golden Lions awards of the Venice Biennale.
