Korea, Republic ofThe Graduate School of Architecture at Seoul National University offers Master of Science in Architectural Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture & Architectural Engineering.
Master’s Program
Requirement of Course Completion
1) Minimum 24 credits are required for program completion. (GPA 3.0↑)
2) Students may take graduate courses that are offered by other departments/divisions, even if not considered as major courses in our department, based on their academic advisors’ recommendation and approval of the head of department. In this case, course credits may be counted as major course credits up to half of the required credits for program completion. Within this half of the required credits, students may earn by taking courses from a different department/division (six credits may be earned by taking courses in the undergraduate program).
① For students who entered the program before 2021 (~2020학번), maximum 3 credits taken from the course “Research on Thesis for Graduate Program”(대학원 논문연구) can be included in total credits for program completion and counted as major course credits. Surplus credits exceeding 3 are not included neither in total credits nor in major course credits.
② For students who enter the program after 2020 (2021학번~), credits taken from the course “Research on Thesis for Graduate Program” are not counted as major course credits, and maximum 3 credits can be included in total credits for program completion. Since the “Research on Thesis…” course will not be considered a major course, ‘half of the required credits for program completion’ mentioned in the clause 1 – 2) above will be defined as (a-b)/2.
– a: total 24 credits (Master’s program completion requirement)
– b: credits taken from the course “Research on Thesis…” (maximum 3 credits)
3) Students who entered the program before 2021 (~20학번) can take maximum 9 credits per semester, 12 credits if include «Research of Thesis…» course.
4) Students who enter the program after 2020 (21학번~) are required to take minimum 3 credits from the list of convergence courses on the bottom of this page.
5) Starting from 2022, maximum 3 credits taken from courses in ‘대학원 공통역량교과목’ category can be included in total credits for program completion.
Master’s Thesis Submission Qualification Exam
1) The foreign language examination applicant must have registered at least 1 semester.
2) The comprehensive exam applicant must have registered at least 2 semesters and completed the ‘environmental protection and safety education’ and ‘education for life protection’.
3) The thesis submission qualification exam contains more than 3 questions based on majors, and students are to select 3 questions to answer.
4) The score of each question must exceed 40% to be added to the total score, and the total qualification score must be at least 60 points out of 100 points.
Master’s Thesis Submission Qualification
1) Students who have passed the thesis submission qualification exam(including comprehensive exam(major test) and foreign language exam) are qualified for submitting their graduation thesis.
2) Architecture Major
① Students entering before 2021 (~2020학번)
Students are required to publish at least one thesis in KCI level academic journal. It can be replaced with awarded project participated individually in competitions such as the following:
Awarded project from architectural competitions hosted by domestic or foreign government
Awarded project from architectural competitions hosted by the primary architectural related organization such as Architectural Institute of Korea, Korean Institute of Architects, Korea Architects Institute, or any other organizations of equivalent level out of country
Awarded project from domestic and foreign competitions that is published in architectural academic journals, such as Avery Index or A&HCI. (For students who enrolled after 2016 spring semester)
