This is the keynote lecture following the MArch Jury for the Emergent Technologies & Design Taught Postgraduate Programme.
As digital design is reaching maturity and acceptance in our industry, the issues the built environment is facing have exponentially increased in complexity. Whilst policymakers slowly make progress in the transitioning away from fossil carbon, the time (was) is now to apply the research in the fields of computational design, digital fabrication, and material experimentation in real life projects.
As engineering has been projected in the eye of the storm, to provide effective answers on how to transition our buildings and interventions to a more sustainable output, Ed Tibuzzi will offer some reflections on how AKTII through a design-led approach is making concrete steps forward in a positive direction.
Focusing on the relation between architecture and engineering, the fundamental role that data is assuming in our designs, how technology is blurring the boundaries and the challenges of implementing leading edge research in the developed and developing parts of the world.
Edoardo Tibuzzi is a designer and researcher based in London(UK). He is Design Director at AKTII and leads the practice applied research team.
His expertise in low carbon structures, interoperability, form finding, MMC and data driven design has been key in unlocking several completed projects such as the Google Campus in California and the Bloomberg headquarters in London andCoca-Cola Beatbox for London 2012 Olympics to name a few.
He currently teaches in several academic institutions such AA, Harvard GSD and RCA and published various papers and books on digital fabrication, sustainable design, new technologies and material research.
