The 19th International Architecture Exhibition of Venice, set to take place in 2025, will be titled Intelligens, a concept that reinterprets the notion of intelligence by integrating it with the collective capacity for adaptation and evolution. The upcoming edition of the Biennale presents a fundamental challenge: rethinking the relationship between architecture, knowledge, and sustainability in a world increasingly affected by environmental crises.
Throughout history, architecture has been a testament to human ingenuity, yet it is also one of the disciplines with the greatest environmental impact. Today, the construction sector is responsible for a significant share of global carbon emissions, making it imperative to reassess its principles and practices. In light of this, the 2025 Biennale will not merely showcase architectural works but will also explore new forms of intelligence applied to design and urban planning.
The event will bring together experts from various fields—including architects, engineers, biologists, and data scientists—to seek innovative responses to contemporary challenges. The exhibition will be structured around four perspectives on intelligence: natural, artificial, collective, and combined. Each of these dimensions will offer a different approach to how architecture can evolve to integrate more harmoniously with its surroundings.
One of the most significant aspects of this edition will be experimentation as a driver of change. In a world where traditional solutions have often fallen short, the Biennale aims to be a space for trial and learning, where even failures provide valuable lessons. Under this premise, architects will take on a transformative role, acting as catalysts for new ways of inhabiting the planet.
Beyond technological innovation, Intelligens invites a deeper reflection: how can architecture reclaim its human dimension and contribute to building more resilient communities? In a context of rapid urbanization and climate change, the 2025 Biennale aspires to become a turning point, demonstrating that intelligent design is not just about efficiency but also about responsibility and sensitivity toward the future.
