Paulo Mendes da Rocha wins the 2021 UIA Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement

Brazilian architect, Paulo Mendes da Rocha has been announced as winner of the 2021 UIA Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement .

The Jury resolved to recognize Mendes da Rocha’s «unique status as a daring iconoclast whose work has taken architecture to new heights of technical virtuosity». Regarding his conviction that all spaces should be understood as public, the jury said that his «UIA Gold Medal exemplifies a lifetime of achievement spanning seven decades that emphasized architecture as a public act», as stated on the International Union of Architects (UIA) website.

His passion for concrete and innovative construction methods has led him to be a great representative of modern architecture not only in Latin America but internationally; and has earned him awards such as the 2nd Mies Van der Rohe prize for Latin American architecture (2000), the Pritzker Prize (2006), the Venice Biennale Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement (2016) being the first Brazilian architect to obtain this merit. In 2017, he was also awarded the Royal Gold Medal.
